Abandon ship, the Indian Navy has alerted the pirates as its elite naval commandos arrived on the cargo ship 'MV Lila Norfolk', which was hijacked late last night near the coast of Somalia, military officials said on Friday.
The elite commandos, MARCOS, carry out the clean-up operations.
About 15 Indian crew members are on board the ship in the Arabian Sea.
The hijacking was reported by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British military organization that monitors the movements of various ships in strategic waterways.
The Indian crew on board are safe, military officials told news agency ANI.
The Naval Warship INS Chennai, a naval destroyer, which was distracted from its anti-piracy patrol, has launched its helicopter and warned pirates to abandon the hijacked ship.
Last month, the Navy deployed several warships to the sea to “maintain a deterrent presence” after a series of recent ship attacks, including a drone strike near the coast of India that the United States blamed on Iran.
The latest attack comes as many ships have been diverted from the Red Sea, where Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels have carried out drone and missile attacks in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, where Israel is fighting Hamas.
Last month, a drone strike hit the MV Chem Pluto tanker 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers) off the coast of India.
