The first major rain of this year has led to some roads being blocked in some parts of Uttarakhand and water entering houses. However, a silver lining to the tragedy is that forest fires were extinguished in some places where the rainfall occurred.
A cloudburst at Someshwar in Almora district on Wednesday caused destruction of crops and farmers with both small and large land holdings suffered losses. The water also entered several houses. Farmers in Pithoragarh have also demanded compensation from the government for crop losses due to hailstorm.
In some parts of the Kumaon region, which includes Almora district, rainfall led to extinguishing of forest fires.
In Bageshwar district of the region, the heavy traffic jams caused at many places on Kapkot Bageshwar road. Many people also got stuck when they tried to cross a stream where a lot of water was flowing due to the rain.
Vehicular movement was also stopped at a market near Purola Hudoli ravine in Uttarkashi district.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Supreme Court blasted the Uttarakhand government while hearing a petition on forest fires in the state, saying the government cannot rely solely on sowing rain and clouds to control the fires.
The government said only 0.1 percent of the forest cover in the hill state was on fire. It also told the court that 398 cases of forest fires have been registered and 350 cases have been registered.
