OpenAI's ChatGPT continues to make waves worldwide and surprises people with its exceptional capabilities. Since its arrival, people around the world have been using the bot for everything from researching assignments to planning vacations. However, Shoshana Davis, a Gen Z career expert and founder of the career consulting firm Fairy Job Mother, told CNBC Make it that young professionals have made mistakes using AI tools like ChatGPT to generate job application and cover letter responses.
“So I speak to companies and employers who are hiring between 10 and 1,000 Gen Zs every year. And one of the key challenges I see right now is the use of AI, specifically ChatGPT, and it's not being used. properly, and it's not being used effectively,” Ms. Davis told the outlet.
The career counselor explained that “employers suspected that job seekers were using ChatGPT after receiving “hundreds of the exact same cover letters word for word,” or answers to interview questions that were the same.
In fact, according to CNBCA Canva survey found that 45% of job seekers have used AI to build, update, or improve their resume. And it appears that Generation Z is relying the most on artificial intelligence, according to a study by Grammarly.

Ms Davis said that while we should certainly “embrace technology and AI,” copying answers from ChatGPT could hurt your job prospects. She also shared a recent incident with a recruiter hiring for a brand marketing position. She says that in the application, the candidates were asked a question about their favorite fitness-related product launches from the past year.
“They said they got about 100 identical responses to the question 'my favorite campaign launch was Peloton' and the employer said 'eventually that was ChatGPT, but Peloton might as well have been released four or five years ago,'” Davis said.
The careers advisor added that young people need to “educate themselves” on how to use ChatGPT properly and not just copy answers.
