Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said eradicating corruption has been a top priority of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government for the past decade.
In an interview with Hindustan's Editor-in-Chief Shashi Shekhar, Prime Minister Modi alleged that the NDA had removed the names of over 10 crore fake beneficiaries 'who were not even born' from government schemes. This saved the government ₹2.75 trillion.
Here are five ways Prime Minister Modi said the NDA stopped corruption:
- Immediately after the formation of the new government in 2014, we took steps to act against corruption at various levels.
- We ended Group C and Group D interviews in central hiring.
- We have started the National Single Window System for approval in the country.
- We have tried to make government services as anonymous as possible.
- We have created the DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) system to prevent the money of the poor from ending up in the pockets of middlemen.
The Prime Minister also told the Editor-in-Chief of Hindustan that he is determined to take strict action against the corrupt.
“Steps are being taken even in states where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in power. The stories you have heard that we are only looking for political corruption are being spread by people who are under the sword of investigative agencies,” PM Modi said.
He further said that of all the corruption cases investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), only 3 percent involve people in politics. “The remaining 97 percent of cases are linked to officials and criminals. Action is also being taken against them.”
“Those who see benefits in a corrupt system are the ones who shout foul and present the wrong image to the people. The ED has also arrested many corrupt officers,” PM Modi said.
Prime Minister Modi also said that assets worth thousands of millions of corrupt bureaucrats, criminals linked to illicit financing and drug dealers have been seized. Before 2014, the ED only seized assets worth ₹5,000 crore, while in the last decade that amount has increased to over ₹1 trillion.
