The Supreme Court on May 10 granted interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Delhi excise policy “scam” case. The interim bail was granted until June 1. The Delhi Chief Minister is expected to surrender on June 2.
Kejriwal was previously lodged in Tihar Jail. He was in judicial custody in connection with an investigation into the alleged fraud in the Delhi excise policy case. The Enforcement Directorate had arrested him on March 21.
Kejriwal, the national president of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was granted interim bail till June 1 so that he could campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
While granting him interim bail, the Supreme Court was quoted by Live the law saying: “The appellant – Arvind Kejriwal is the Chief Minister of Delhi and a leader of one of the national parties. No doubt serious allegations have been made but he has not been convicted. He has no criminal record. He is not a threat to the society.”
The Supreme Court bench had added that a “more holistic and libertarian view is warranted” as investigation in the case has remained pending since August 2022, when ED registered the ECIR. [an internal document for the ED to record evidence]and the legality and validity of Kejriwal's arrest are themselves pending challenge.
In his first interaction after coming out of jail, Kejriwal said, “Today I have come out due to the blessings of Lord Hanuman and the prayers of millions of people of the country.”
“…I want to thank you all. You have given me your blessings. I want to thank the judges of the Supreme Court, it is thanks to them that I am standing before you. We must save the country from dictatorship…,” said Kejriwal.
