Tata Sons on Monday appointed former Turkish Airlines Chairman Ilker Ayci as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India. “The Board of Directors has approved, after thorough consultation, the appointment of Ilker Ayci as CEO & MD of Air India. This appointment is subject to required regulatory approvals,” Tata Sons said in a press release.
Speaking of Mr Ayci’s appointment, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said: “Ilker is an airline industry leader who has led Turkish Airlines to its current success during his tenure there. We are pleased to welcome Ilker to the Tata Group, where he Air India would lead into the new era.”
“Air India’s board of directors met to consider Mr. Ayci’s candidacy. Mr. Chandrasekaran was a special invitee to this board meeting,” the press release said.
He will take up his duties on or before April 1, 2022, Tata Sons said.

Recently, Tata Group has officially taken over Air India from the government.
Air India is the third airline brand in the Tata Group’s stable – it has majority stakes in AirAsia India and Vistara, a joint venture with Singapore Airlines Ltd.
Tata Sons is the holding company for the salt-to-software conglomerate.
Currently, Air India operates more than 4,400 domestic and 1,800 international landing and parking slots at domestic airports and 900 slots abroad.
Tata had founded Tata Airlines in 1932, which was later renamed Air India in 1946. The government had taken over the airline in 1953, but JRD Tata remained as chairman until 1977. The transfer marked Air India’s return to Tatas after 69 years.
