Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on March 19 predicted defeat for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, saying the country is fervently demanding change.
Kharge said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'guarantees' in the BJP's poll campaign will meet the same fate as the party's 'India Shining' slogan ahead of the 2004 general elections.
“The country fervently demands change. The guarantees currently being touted by the Modi government would meet the same fate as that of BJP's 'India Shining' slogan of 2004,” Kharge said in his opening address at the Congress Working Committee meeting. CWC) held on March 19.
'India Shining' was a political slogan referring to economic optimism in India and was used by the then ruling BJP under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for the 2004 Lok Sabha polls. But the BJP lost the elections and the Congress-led UPA came to power.
Kharge also praised Rahul Gandhi's just concluded Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Rahul concluded his 63-day march in Mumbai by paying tribute to Dr BR Ambedkar and reading the preamble of the Constitution on March 16, the day the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls was announced.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases from April 19.
