Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed the furor surrounding Sam Pitroda's comments on inheritance tax and made his stand on the issue clear. During an interview with News18, Prime Minister Modi said it is his responsibility to tell people what Congress plans to do. He revealed BJP's views on inheritance tax and spoke about his actions if he comes to power for the third time.
“One of their leaders (Pitroda) gave an interview in America. He talked about a 55% tax on real estate. I am talking about virasat (inheritance), and they are about plundering it and redistributing wealth. That's their history. What else will they do? It is my responsibility to tell people that this is what they intend to do,” Moneycontrol quoted Prime Minister Modi during the interview.
Elaborating on his point, Prime Minister Modi made it clear that the BJP has no intention of imposing inheritance tax if voted to power.
“What the Bharatiya Janata Party plans to do is in our manifesto. How does the thought that we will carry out their plan even occur to you? The ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party is clear. We are facing the country with our manifesto and work, please do not impose their great thoughts on us,” PM Modi added.
Prime Minister Modi's comments came ahead of the third phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which 94 Lok Sabha constituencies will vote in twelve states.
The inheritance tax debate
Sam Pitroda, the chairman of the overseas wing of Congress, caused a major controversy with his comments on inheritance law in the US and also talked about “wealth redistribution.” The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was quick to capitalize on this opportunity and cornered Conress over Sam Pitroda's comments.
Prime Minister Modi took the debate to another level when he accused the Congress of having a hidden agenda to legally deprive people of their assets and lifelong savings.
“Today, yet another hidden agenda of Congress has emerged. Today, Congress said it will impose an estate tax. The property you saved through hard work and hardship, Congress will plunder from you after they form the government. For the Congress, it is 'Congress ki loot, zindagi ke sath bhi aur zindagi ke baad bhi'. Congress has become so disconnected from the social values of India and the sentiments of Indian society that they have no idea about family values,” the Prime Minister said. at a public meeting in Chhattisgarh's Surguja.
“The prince's adviser to the royal family has said more taxes should be levied on the middle class. Now that these people have gone a step further, Congress says it will impose an inheritance tax, and it will also impose tax on the “The inheritance you received from your parents will not be given to your children,” PM Modi added to it.
Congress quickly distanced itself from Sam Pitroda's, saying it was his personal opinion. The grand old party also denounced the prime minister, accusing him of diverting attention from his government's failures.
