In an open letter, prominent vice chancellors and academic leaders from across India have expressed their views on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations over the selection process of university heads.
The signatories, including prominent figures such as Prof. Vinay Pathak of CSJM University, Kanpur, and Prof. Bhagwati Prakash Sharma of Pacific University, Udaipur, have denounced claims that appointments are based on preferences and not merit.
The letter not only defends the integrity of the university leadership selection process, but also highlights the academic community's determination to uphold educational standards and ethical governance against politically motivated allegations.
“The process by which vice-chancellors are selected is characterized by a strict, transparent and rigorous procedure, based on values such as meritocracy, scientific distinction and integrity,” the letter said, categorically rejecting Gandhi's claims.
Emphasizing their role as “custodians of knowledge and stewards of academia,” academic leaders reaffirmed their commitment to high standards of governance, ethical conduct and institutional integrity. They expressed their commitment to fostering an environment that values diversity, encourages independent thinking and supports academic achievement.
In addition, the Vice Chancellors detailed progress in academic quality and societal relevance under their leadership, citing improvements in global rankings, innovative research and curriculum enhancements that effectively bridge the gap between academic theory and industrial practice.
The open letter also addressed the political implications of Gandhi's statements, urging the public and other stakeholders to distinguish fact from fiction and refrain from spreading baseless rumours. “We strongly urge all concerned individuals to use discernment in distinguishing between fact and fiction, to refrain from spreading unfounded rumors and to engage in dialogue that is informed, constructive and supportive of our shared purpose: creating a dynamic and inclusive educational environment. ” the letter encouraged.
Finally, the signatories called for legal action against Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of defamation and making false claims for political gain. “It is, therefore, fervently prayed that immediate appropriate action be taken against him in accordance with law,” the letter said.
