taipei:
Taiwan on Saturday condemned the timing of cooperation between China and Russia at the start of the Winter Olympics as “despicable” and said the Chinese government was disgracing the spirit of the Games.
At a meeting of their leaders hours before the official opening of the Winter Olympics, China and Russia supported each other in clashes with Ukraine and Taiwan, promising to cooperate more against the West.
Russia expressed support for China’s position that democratically governed Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and opposed any form of independence for the island.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said China’s continued false claims that the island is part of the People’s Republic of China were exactly the same as the country’s practice of spreading fake news.
“Not only does it increase the disgust and disgust of the Chinese government’s arrogance and bullying among the Taiwanese people, it also clearly shows all countries of the world the sinister face of its aggression, expansionism and the invasion of peace. by the Chinese communist regime.”
At a time when the eyes of the world are on the Winter Olympics and cheering on their athletes, the Chinese government has used the Russian summit to expand authoritarianism, the ministry added.
“This is an affront to the peaceful spirit embodied by the Olympic Rings and will be rejected by the Taiwanese people and held in contempt by democratic countries.”
The United States also criticized the meeting, saying that Chinese President Xi Jinping should have used the meeting to push for a easing of tensions in Ukraine.
The Olympics, to which Taiwan has sent a small team of four athletes to compete, are taking place at a time of heightened tensions between Taipei and Beijing, with China regularly sending military ships and planes near the island.
While Russia is a close friend of China, both Russia and Taiwan have small de facto embassies in each other’s capitals.
Former president of Taiwan, Chiang Ching-kuo, who began tentative democratic reforms, spoke Russian and was married to a Russian woman he met while working there in the 1930s.
