Congress leader P. Chidambaram on May 10 questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Rahul Gandhi's demand for a probe into the Prime Minister's claim that the grand old party 'pace charges black money' has received from industrialists Gautam Adani. and Mukesh Ambani.
The silence of the two leaders is ominous, said former Union minister Chidambaram.
“The Honorable Prime Minister had made a very serious allegation that two prominent industrialists have huge amounts of cash and these have been delivered to the Congress party. This statement, coming from the Honorable Prime Minister, must be viewed with caution. Mr. Rahul Gandhi has in all seriousness demanded a probe by the CBI or ED. The demand for an investigation is absolutely justified,” Chidambaram said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on May 10.

The former home minister was referring to Prime Minister Modi questioning the Congress leaders' “sudden” silence on (Mukesh) Ambani and (Gautam) Adani in this (Lok Sabha) election.
At an election rally earlier this week, Prime Minister Modi asked whether the Congress was receiving 'temporary loads of black money' from Ambani and Adani. “Since the Rafale issue came up, they started talking about five industrialists. Then they started talking about Ambani and Adani. I want to ask Congress's Shehzada (Rahul Gandhi) from Telangana how much black money did they receive from Adani, Ambani?” Modi asked at a rally in Telangana on May 9.

Reacting to Prime Minister Modi's allegations, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had demanded a probe by central investigating agencies. Chidambaram said the demand was justified.
“Why has the Honorable Prime Minister (CBI Minister) been silent for the last 24 hours? Why has the Honorable Minister of Finance (the ED Minister) not responded to the demand for an inquiry? Their silence is ominous,” he said.
