Ukraine’s Zelenskiy addressed the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
United Nations:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on world leaders at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday to act united against the Russian invasion, saying Moscow must be pushed back so the world can focus on solving pressing global problems.
Zelenskiy drew applause as he took his place at the lectern at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, wearing a distinctive olive green shirt for his first personal appearance at the annual UNGA since Russia invaded his country in 2022.
“Ukraine is doing everything it can to ensure that after Russian aggression, no one in the world dares to attack any country,” he said. “Arms must be curbed, war crimes must be punished, deported people must return home and the occupying forces must return to their own country.”
“We have to be united to make it – and we will.”
He accused Russia of manipulating global food markets to gain international recognition of its ownership of land it seized from Kiev. He said Moscow was committing genocide by kidnapping Ukrainian children.
In a nod to the Global South, whose support he is seeking in his standoff with Russia, Zelenskiy spoke of the worsening climate crisis and natural disasters, mentioning the recent earthquake in Morocco and the floods in Libya.
“We have to stop this. We must act united to defeat the aggressor and focus all our capabilities and energies on tackling these challenges,” he told the General Assembly.
Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials said nine people were killed in Russian strikes, including a drone strike that set fire to industrial warehouses.
