US President Joe Biden announced on Friday that Washington will impose more than 500 new sanctions on Russia, as the United States looks to increase pressure on Moscow to mark the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine.
The United States will also impose new export restrictions on nearly 100 entities for providing support to Russia and take action to further reduce Russian energy revenues, Biden said in a statement.
The measures are aimed at holding Russia to account for the war and the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Biden said, as Washington looks set to continue supporting Ukraine even as it faces an acute ammunition shortage and US military aid is being cut back. Congress has been postponed for months. .
“They will make Putin pay an even higher price for his aggression abroad and repression at home,” Biden said of the sanctions.
Friday's measures will target individuals involved in Navalny's capture, as well as Russia's financial sector, defense industrial base, procurement networks and sanctions evaders on multiple continents, he said.
The sanctions are the latest of thousands of targets announced by the United States and its allies following Russia's Feb. 24, 2022, invasion of Ukraine, which killed tens of thousands of people and destroyed cities.
“Two years after this war, the Ukrainian people continue to fight with enormous courage. But the ammunition is running out. Ukraine needs more supplies from the United States to hold the line against Russia's brutal attacks, made possible by weapons and ammunition. from Iran and North Korea,” Biden said.
“That is why the House of Representatives must pass the bipartisan supplemental national security bill before it is too late.”
