Kiev:
Ukraine said Friday it has returned the bodies of nearly 60 soldiers killed fighting the Russian invasion.
“Another repatriation took place, as a result of which 58 fallen defenders were sent back to Ukraine from Russian-controlled territory,” the POW Coordination Headquarters said.
It published photos of white trucks with the Red Cross insignia on the windshield.
“Special thanks for the assistance from the International Committee of the Red Cross,” the post said.
Following the Russian invasion in 2022, there have been regular prisoner exchanges and body repatriations between the two sides.
In late January, Ukraine said it had recovered the bodies of 77 Ukrainian soldiers.
The January repatriation took place shortly after the crash of a Russian military plane that Moscow said was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war and shot down by Kiev.
Ukraine has questioned whether Ukrainian soldiers were actually on board and said Moscow had never given advance notice that POWs would be flown close to the border.
Both repatriations of bodies appeared to be unrelated to the plane crash.
