Shanghai:
China’s military will begin “combat training activities” on the Myanmar side of the border from Saturday, it said on social media, a day after a convoy of trucks carrying goods to the neighboring Southeast Asian country went up in flames.
The incident, which Myanmar state media called an insurgent attack, came amid concerns about insecurity in China, where the envoy met top officials in Myanmar’s capital for talks on border stability after recent signs of rare tension in their tyres.
The training aims to “test the rapid maneuverability, border sealing and fire attack capabilities of theater troops,” the Southern Theater Command, one of the five members of China’s People’s Liberation Army, said on messaging app WeChat.
The brief statement provided no details on the timing or number of troops.
Friday’s fire in the town of Muse came as Myanmar’s military has lost control of several towns and military outposts in the northeast and elsewhere as it battles the largest coordinated offensive it has faced since seizing power in 2021. a coup.
The increase in fighting has displaced more than two million people in Myanmar, the United Nations says.
