Washington:
A land-based cruise missile launched from Houthi-controlled Yemen struck a commercial tanker, causing fire and damage but no casualties, two US defense officials told Reuters on Monday.
The attack on the motor transport STRINDA took place about 60 nautical miles north of Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the officials said. The U.S. Navy destroyer Mason responded to the scene and provided assistance, officials said.
Yemen's Houthi movement is targeting international shipping amid regional tensions over the war between Israel and Hamas. On Saturday, the Houthis said they would target all ships bound for Israel, regardless of nationality, and warned all international shipping companies against doing business with Israeli ports.
It was not immediately clear whether the STRINDA had ties to Israel or was headed to an Israeli port.
