New York:
Two Indian nationals were among five people arrested by US border authorities after they were apprehended for illegally entering the country from Canada by boat.
US Border Patrol agents from the Detroit Sector arrested the five foreigners during a smuggling attempt near Algonac, Michigan, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported Wednesday.
It said Border Patrol dispatchers monitoring the remote video surveillance system crossed a ship on the St. Clair River late at night on Feb. 20 near a known smuggling route on the St. Clair River and immediately contacted officers in the area.
The officers arrived on the scene and immediately found five people near where the ship was heading for the shoreline. The five people admitted to crossing the border from Canada by boat.
Officers also saw two migrants completely drenched and shivering from the frigid temperature. The individuals told officers that they had fallen into the river while climbing out of the boat.
All five individuals were subsequently taken into custody and transported to a local office for processing.
“During the processing phase of the study, agents identified two subjects from India and the rest from Nigeria, Mexico and the Dominican Republic,” the CBP said.
The individuals are being prosecuted for US immigration violations.
“The smuggler tried to take advantage of the darkness and freezing temperatures to mask his criminal activities. Bad people will do anything they can to avoid arrest, endangering themselves and others,” Chief Patrol Agent Robert Danley said.
