Jakarta:
A magnitude 6.5 undersea earthquake shook Indonesia's West Java province on Saturday night without causing massive waves, the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.
The earthquake struck at 11:29 pm in Jakarta (1629 GMT) on Saturday, with the epicenter 151 km southwest of Garut Regency and a depth of 10 km, the agency said.
The earthquake's tremors were also felt in nearby Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, and nearby Banten province, as well as in the provinces of Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java, the report said.
In West Java province, the earthquake intensity was felt at IV MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) in the cities of Sukabumi and Tasikmalaya, and at III to IV MMI in Bandung city, the capital of West Java province, it said agency.
No tsunami alert was issued by the agency because the tremors would not potentially cause huge waves, Xinhua news agency reported.
Indonesia, an archipelagic country, is prone to earthquakes due to its location in a vulnerable earthquake-affected area, the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire'.
