London:
The Princess of Wales must stay in hospital for up to two weeks after successful abdominal surgery, Kensington Palace announced on Wednesday.
The 42-year-old wife of William, Prince of Wales, heir to the British throne, was admitted to a private clinic in central London on Tuesday, a statement said.
“The operation was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days before returning home to continue her recovery,” the palace said.
“Based on current medical advice, it is unlikely that she will resume her public duties until after Easter (March 31).
The princess, commonly known as Kate, is one of the most popular – and photographed – members of the royal family.
She is often seen next to 41-year-old William, with whom she has three young children, but is increasingly performing solo in public.
Kensington Palace added: “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate.
“She hopes the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normalcy as possible for her children; and her desire for her personal medical information to remain private.
'Kensington Palace will therefore only provide updates on Her Royal Highness's progress if there is important new information to share.
“The Princess of Wales would like to apologize to everyone involved for having to postpone her upcoming engagements.
“She looks forward to rehoming as many as possible as quickly as possible.”
