Moscow:
Russia's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday criticized plans to hold a Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland as a futile initiative by the US Democratic Party ahead of this year's US presidential elections.
The high-level conference will take place in Switzerland from June 15 to 16 and, according to Swiss media, US President Joe Biden will attend.
“American Democrats, who need photos and videos of events that supposedly indicate that their project 'Ukraine' is still afloat, are behind this,” state news agency TASS quoted Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying.
She accused Washington of being motivated primarily by the electoral process.
“The elections are everything. Ukraine is nothing,” she said.
The Swiss government said on Wednesday that the peace conference will take place from June 15 to 16 at the luxury resort of Burgenstock near the central city of Lucerne and will be hosted by President Viola Amherd.
Russia has accused Switzerland of abandoning its traditional neutrality in the Ukrainian conflict, as well as the issue of what to do with Russian assets in the banking country.
Moscow last month summoned the Swiss ambassador to pave the way for the seizure of Russian assets in the country.
Moscow has promised to continue its more than two-year offensive in Ukraine.
