Cairo, Reuters:
Israel launched an airstrike on Syria’s Aleppo airport late on Saturday, putting it out of service, the Syrian Defense Ministry said.
“The Israeli enemy carried out an airstrike from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, west of Latakia, targeting Aleppo International Airport, leading to material damage to the airport and its decommissioning,” the ministry added.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The airport only came into use on Saturday after simultaneous rocket attacks by Israeli forces on the airports of the Syrian capital Damascus and the northern city of Aleppo damaged the runways and put both hubs out of service on Thursday.
Damascus airport is still out of use.
Sources say the attacks on the airports are aimed at disrupting Iranian supply lines to Syria, where Tehran’s influence has grown since the country began supporting President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war that began in 2011.
