Washington:
Twitter’s updated account verification program has finally launched.
Previously, every account had a blue check mark, now there is a development where some accounts have become Gold.
Last month, CEO Elon Musk took to the microblogging site to make the announcement. “Sorry for the delay, we’re tentatively launching Verified on Friday next week.” he posted.
“Gold check for companies, gray check for government, blue check for individuals (celebrities or not) and all verified accounts are manually verified before the check is activated,” the SpaceX owner added.
He had previously tweeted about using different colors for different organizations and individuals, but recently fleshed out the details.
“All verified individual people will have the same blue check mark, because otherwise the line of what is ‘remarkable’ is too subjective.” He tweeted.
According to a report from The Verge, the microblogging platform’s “Twitter Blue” subscriptions rolled out despite warnings from Twitter’s own trust and security staff.
Soon after, numerous “verified” accounts began impersonating well-known personalities or brands.
The chaos started with a fake Nintendo account, which posted the image of the well-known game character Mario giving the middle finger to the Twitter bird.
Meanwhile, another fake Twitter account surfaced for “Eli Lilly,” the pharmaceutical company. It had tweeted that insulin had become free.
According to a report from The Verge, this turned many advertisers away from the platform. Then Musk shut down the $7.99 service within days of its release.
Musk had taken matters into his own hands, tweeting that any account attempting to impersonate someone else would be disabled unless the user declared it a parody account.
Coming to the current multicolored verification system, Musk called it “painful, but necessary.”
He claimed a “longer explanation” of how the system would work would appear “next week.”
