Kherson, Ukraine:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday praised the efforts of rescuers and volunteers who evacuated residents from the Kherson region, which was partially flooded after the destruction of a Russian-held dam.
“In Kherson, I visited a border crossing where people are being evacuated from flooded areas. Our job is to protect lives and help people as much as possible. Thank you to the rescuers and volunteers! Thank you to everyone involved in this work!” Zelensky said.
Zelensky posted videos showing him meeting with local officials, who explained the system and went to look at the floodwaters.
Shortly before, Zelensky had announced a work trip to the Kherson region, where AFP journalists saw reinforced security in the morning.
Zelensky said he held a meeting where he discussed the “evacuation of the population from potential flood areas, the elimination of the emergency caused by the dam explosion and the organization of life support for the flooded areas.”
“Prospects for the recovery of the region’s ecosystem and the operational military situation” were also discussed, he said.
On Wednesday, Zelensky appealed to international organizations and expressed his displeasure at the lack of help from the UN and the Red Cross in the aftermath of the destruction.
“Every person who dies there is a judgment on the existing international architecture and international organizations that have forgotten how to save lives,” he said in his evening speech.
