South Africa suffered another semi-final defeat at an ICC event and went down fighting to Australia at the penultimate hurdle of the 2023 Cricket World Cup on Thursday. Despite posting a mediocre total of 212 runs on the board, the Proteas took the match to the end, but it was the Australian team that had the upper hand. When South Africa coach Rob Walter was asked after the match about the potential winner of the final between India and Australia, he responded rather coolly.
Understandably disappointed with his team’s semi-final exit, Walter told the reporter that he doesn’t even care who will win the World Cup, knowing his team is eliminated.
Walter, however, admitted that India would have an advantage as it is a home event for them.
News reporter:If I could ask you – can I have a few words or would you mind answering the question about India versus Australia? I mean, how are you? I mean, once you, once you get over the disappointment, who would? it, take the trophy?
Rob Walter: Honestly, the chance that I’ll watch is about 1%. And to be even more brutally honest, I don’t really care. But because the World Cup takes place in India, it is always great when the home country wins the World Cup. I have a lot of friends in the Australian dressing room so I probably have a soft spot for a few of them, especially the coach, to do well. But when we see when we last played against India here and the support that there is around the team, and the great hope and inspiration that winning a World Cup on home soil actually brings. I think it would only be fitting if India won. And in the same breath they have been the best side in the league and played the best cricket, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that will happen.
India will take on Australia in the final on Sunday.
