Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga was reprimanded on Saturday for violating the code of conduct during Friday’s World Cup qualifier against the Netherlands. In a statement, the International Cricket Council said Hasaranga had broken its code in relation to the “misuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match”. “The incident occurred after Hasaranga was fired, when he aggressively hit the border baseboards with his bat on his return to the pavilion,” the ICC statement said.
Hasaranga admitted the violation and accepted the sanction.
In Friday’s game, Maheesh Theekshana and Hasaranga spun through the Dutch batsman as Sri Lanka secured a 21-run victory in the opening game of the Super Six for both teams.
The win kept Sri Lanka at the top of the standings with hosts and Sunday’s opponent Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifiers and on course for one of two places in India.
One penalty point has been added to Hasaranga’s criminal record, for whom it was the second offense in a 24-month period, bringing his number of penalty points to two.
