Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, Garhwal University is a central university with 121 colleges and institutes in the Garhwal region of Uttrakhand.
The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2023 was held across India from May 21 to 31. This entrance exam is conducted to secure admission to the central universities in India. Now almost all major universities fix the minimum CUET score required by the candidate to be eligible for admission into the course. This nationwide computer-based test is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). HNB Garhwal University is looking for candidates for admission without the CUET score this year.
Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna has 121 colleges and institutes affiliated to him in the Garhwal region of Uttrakhand. This year, the University Grant Commission (UGC) has granted permission to HNB Garhwal University and its affiliated colleges to grant admission without the CUET score. It will only apply for this year. It is to be noted that from next year onwards, candidates will have to submit their CUET score to be considered for admission.
This year, HNB Garhwal was supposed to participate in the CUET exams and the admission was to be made on the basis of CUET score only, but due to lack of information from the authorities, a large number of students could not participate in it.
This accident leaves almost 5,000 seats on the university campus and 15,000 seats in the affiliated colleges. There are a total of 20,000 seats vacant in HNB Garhwal University.
The student organizations protested against the CUET norms. After this, the university sent a report on this to UGC with a request to make an exception this year. UGC Secretary Manish R Joshi has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). As per this procedure, it has been decided that first preference will be given to candidates who have appeared for CUET this year. If the seats remain empty afterward, the screening test will be conducted for the remaining seats. It can also be done on the basis of class 12 merit and graduation marks. It is up to the college and its course guidelines.
