Students affiliated with the SFI, and Independent Consolidation, had been protesting for a week on Monday against the draft code labeling some recommendations as an “authoritarian move”.
The Presidency University said on Thursday it will not implement the draft code of conduct, which proposed that processions on campus could only be held with prior approval from the institute’s authorities. Students affiliated with the SFI, the student arm of the CPI-M that controls the university’s student council, and another student union, Independent Consolidation, had been protesting for a week Monday against the draft code that described some of the recommendations as an “authoritarian move”. “.
In a note, student dean Arun Maity said there will be no new disciplinary committee and the code of conduct will not be implemented now. “No code of conduct for students until the next general meeting,” the note said.
“The authorities have backed down after growing student protests. To know the views of general students, we are calling on them to attend the general assembly on July 3,” said independent consolidation member Ahan.
SFI spokesperson Anandarupa Dhar said the student dean was forced to communicate in writing due to ongoing protests that CCTV will only be used on campus for student safety and security, not for additional surveillance. “The presidency is a citadel of free thinking and liberal views. It has always supported a progressive school of thought. We will not tolerate any blueprint to kill democracy on the college campus, or any code of conduct for oversight in the name of discipline,” Dhar had said.
