The Uttar Pradesh government plans to create more than 800 postgraduate (PG) medical seats in government medical institutions/colleges across the state to improve higher medical education. The initiative to increase the number of postgraduate medical seats will start in the coming academic year.
The move will primarily focus on improving the capabilities of institutions such as Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) and the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), along with Greater Noida’s Government Institute of Medical Sciences ( GIMS), Kanpur’s Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College and other medical colleges in remote districts.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, Alok Kumar, Principal Secretary, Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh, said that preparations for another 763 seats have been completed and work on further seats is underway. “This will be the largest increase in postgraduate medical seats in the history of the state, compared to the current over 1,700 seats in government medical institutions,” Kumar added.
To ensure that the plan is not rejected by the National Medical Council (NMC), the Department of Medical Education has prepared a list of seats that can be added to each of the 35 medical colleges as well as the shortcomings pointed out by the directors of the institutions are recognized. /heads, according to reports.
Moreover, the Uttar Pradesh government will reportedly add 150 seats to the previously announced 763. The Medical Education Department aims to supplement specialized care for patients in medical colleges in remote districts. As a result, the proposal also includes allotment of seats to autonomous state medical colleges (ASMCs) established in the last five years.
According to a government notification in July this year, the state has witnessed an increase in medical facilities by 82 percent, from 387 in 2014 to the current 704. Moreover, the number of available MBBS seats has increased by 110 per year. cents, increased from 51,348 in 2014 to the current 1,07,948, while the supply of postgraduate seats has grown by 117 percent, from 31,185 in 2014 to the current 67,802.
If Uttar Pradesh manages to increase the number of postgraduate seats, it will come second in the country after Maharashtra, which currently has 2,488 postgraduate seats, while Delhi has around 1,895 seats and Tamil Nadu around 1,836 seats.
