The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has set aside Rs 90 crore for purchase of sports equipment for 1.3 lakh government primary and upper primary schools.
Each primary school will receive Rs 5,000 under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, while a higher primary school will receive Rs 10,000 for the purchase of sports equipment.
The tender will be done by a panel headed by the chairman of the school management committee (SMC).
Issuing an order, Special Secretary, Primary Education, AK Tiwari said, the government aims to develop team spirit among students through sports and physical education by bringing together individuals from different social and economic backgrounds in a shared interest.
“It will also benefit children to develop respect for the body – their own and that of others – and contribute to the integrated development of body and mind. It would further enhance self-confidence, social and cognitive development and academic performance,” the order said.
According to the guidelines, schools should encourage traditional games and one responsible teacher in each school will be given the responsibility of providing sports equipment and maintaining supplies.
District and block education officers, block resource coordinators and cluster resource coordinators visited each school to review the availability of equipment and its use. There would also be regular third-party inspections and verifications to see if equipment is being used.
