Struggles with poor hostel food are a common experience for students living away from home. Sreyasi Chaitan, a resident of PG accommodation (paying guests), took a light-hearted approach to the issue in a now viral video on Instagram.
Chaitan's video shows her plate of rice, egg cakes and a roti that is unlike any other. The roti was not soft and pliable, but hard and crunchy. In a humorous voiceover, Chaitan joked, “This may look like a roti, but don't be fooled. We eat it with salsa dip and some salad in it. This is a Mexican taco.”
The video resonated with viewers unfamiliar with Mexican food, as tacos are known for their small, crunchy corn tortillas. Chaitan's inedible roti's resemblance to a taco sparked laughter and relatable reactions online.
This is not the first time hostel food issues have gone viral. Another recent video showed a student's attempt to destroy a rock-hard paratha served in her hostel. The video highlighted the disappointment of receiving hard, inedible flatbreads instead of the soft, buttery parathas that students crave.
Chaitan's video adds a humorous touch to a relatable experience and highlights the problems many students face with poor quality food in PG accommodations.
“Taco Bell is getting the toughest competition ever… Best wishes,” said one user.
“Meanwhile my Maggie is quietly cooking in the hostel room,” another user wrote.
