New Delhi:
The Congress today announced that as a sign of protest against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha on July 12, its workers and leaders will hold “maun satyagraha” near Mahatma Gandhi statues in every capital city.
In a statement, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said Gandhi is the strongest and most outspoken opponent of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government.
“We believe that the truth, and our commitment to the sincere welfare of every Indian, speaks loud and clear no matter what tactics the BJP-RSS will use against us or our leaders. India will not allow such fascist forces to pass for too long,” he said.
The Congress had said on Friday it would move the Supreme Court after the Gujarat High Court refused to stay the conviction of Mr Gandhi in a 2019 defamation case over comments made on his Modi surname, claiming the government is finding newer techniques to use his vote to smother.
Undaunted, Gandhi has remained firm in his resolve to take on the ruling regime, Venugopal said. Even outside parliament, he remains the voice of the people and the leader people can trust, he said.
“As a result, not only Congress, but the entire country has been irked by his wrongful and vindictive disqualification,” he claimed.
“We call on 140 crore Indians, irrespective of their origins, to stand with the forces of justice and freedom, to stand up against this suppression of democracy,” said the Congress secretary general.
