A sub-inspector was seriously injured on Friday afternoon when a mob attacked a police team with sharp weapons and sticks in Zinzuwada village in Surendranagar district of Gujarat and freed a history-sheeter, an official said.
Sub-inspector KC Dangar and two constables were attacked while returning to Zinzuwada police station in a private car with Jalasinh Zala, an alleged liquor smuggler, who was arrested after being on the run for some time, Deputy Superintendent of Police JD Purohit said.
In the gang's attack, Dangar suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad, while the two constables also sustained minor injuries, he said.
“Zala managed to flee and teams have been formed to nab him as well as those who were part of the gang that attacked the police party. Zala, a resident of Zinzuwada, is a feared criminal and has been arrested in the past for various crimes including rioting, looting and assault. was wanted in a smuggling case registered in Patan district. Since Patan police could not nab him, they asked Zinzuwada police for help,” the deputy SP said.
Zala was arrested while playing cricket, but one of his associates gathered a crowd to free him, Purohit said.
“When the PSI and his team in a car with Zala reached the entrance of Zinzuwada village, the crowd attacked them with sharp weapons and sticks,” he said.
