Thiruvananthapuram:
When Rahul Gandhi decided to contest the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh too, there were mixed reactions from people in Wayanad in Kerala.
Elections were held in Wayanad Lok Sabha seat on April 26. While some people said there was nothing wrong for him to fight Raebareli as well, there were some who said it was wrong on his part.
At a roadside shop in Wayanad, someone said there was nothing wrong with Gandhi's decision to contest from two seats. “He is leading the INDIA bloc and therefore there is nothing wrong with it,” while another said, “If he wins from both the seats, chances are he will vacate the Wayanad seat.”
“If he does, it might not look good for us. Anyway, let's wait,” said another.
However, veteran Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader PK Kunhalikutty said there was nothing wrong at all with his decision to contest from Raebareli as well.
“The fact is that we (IUML) have asked the national leadership of the Congress party that Rahul should contest from one seat more than Wayanad. Hasn't Prime Minister Modi fought from two seats in the past? We believe that this decision will be a boost for the INDIA bloc,” Mr. Kunhalikutty said.
Rahul Gandhi won the 2019 polls in Wayanad but lost the Amethi seat in Uttar Pradesh. This time he took on CPI leader Annie Raja and state BJP president K. Surendran at Wayanad.
