Many people suffer from a runny nose or cold and cough in winter. Usually these are all caused by a viral infection. There’s nothing to worry about if it’s a common cold. However, if you have a runny nose and swelling, you may have a yeast infection known as fungal sinusitis. It can be very dangerous if not treated in time. Fungal sinusitis mainly targets people with low immunity.
According to a Cleveland Clinic report, sinuses are hollow, interconnected spaces (cavities) in the skull. They extend across the forehead, between the eyes, behind the nose and below the cheekbones. The mucus coats the sinus walls, trapping bacteria and keeping the air moist inside. So the sinuses need to be cleaned regularly. However, they will not function properly if there is a blockage or inflammation.
Check out the symptoms of fungal sinusitis below:
Fever followed by a runny nose
Swelling of the nose and sinuses
The nose begins to clog
There is discomfort in the nose and the skin turns bright red
The nose becomes soft and painful to the touch
When a sinus infection becomes severe, the cheeks and eyes swell
Headache
The face begins to go numb
Some patients also have problems with their eyesight
What is the treatment for this infection?
If you have severe symptoms of fungal sinusitis, you should see a doctor immediately. It is generally treated with antifungal drugs. If regular medications don’t work, your doctor may prescribe corticosteroid medications. Apart from that, a nasal rinse is recommended to keep the nose clean. If the medication fails to treat the infection, surgery may be recommended by the doctor.
