ISRO’s solar mission Aditya L1 successfully escaped Earth’s sphere of influence, the space agency said on Saturday. Aditya L1 has covered a distance of 9.2 lakh kilometers and is now navigating its path towards the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 1 (L1). The solar mission is the second mission in a row where India has successfully sent a spacecraft beyond Earth’s control.
“This is the second time in a row that ISRO has been able to send a spacecraft beyond the Earth’s orbit, the first being the Mars Orbiter Mission,” the Indian space agency said in a post on social media platform X.
The development came days after the Aditya L1 mission completed a crucial maneuver to begin its 110-day journey to the destination around the L1 Lagrange point.
“On to Sun-Earth L1 point! The Trans-Lagrangian Point 1 Insertion (TL1I) maneuver was successfully completed. The spacecraft is now on a trajectory that will take it to the Sun-Earth L1 point. It will be injected into orbit around L1 after about 110 days through a maneuver,” ISRO said in a post on X.

Journey of 1.5 million kilometers
Aditya-L1 is expected to be placed in a halo orbit around Lagrangian point 1, positioned as much as 1.5 million kilometers from our planet, directly aligned with the Sun’s trajectory. This ambitious journey is expected to span a period of four months. Once in orbit, Aditya-L1 will maintain a constant distance of about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, a tiny fraction of the enormous distance between Earth and the Sun.
The main goal of the mission is to closely examine the Sun’s outer atmosphere, viewing the Sun as an immense ball of gas.
