Hindustan Unilever has rebranded its 'health food drinks' as 'functional nutrition drinks' (FND). This change comes in the wake of the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry's directive to e-commerce sites, directing them not to include such products under the 'healthy drinks' category. This essentially means that HUL brands like Horlicks and Boost now fall under the new category.
“We have changed the category labels to FND, which is a much better way to call it,” said CFO Ritesh Tiwari.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry previously advised e-commerce platforms not to classify Cadbury Bournvita and similar drinks as 'health drinks'. This is because the Food Safety and Standards Act does not include a 'health drinks' category.
Earlier, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights said the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS Act) 2006 did not define 'health drinks'.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked e-commerce websites not to classify dairy, cereal or malted drinks under the categories of 'health drink' or 'energy drink' as it is an incorrect term to use. can mislead customers.
“National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), a statutory body constituted under Section (3) of the Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR), 2005, after its investigation under of Section 14 of the CRPC Act, 2005 had come to the conclusion that there is no 'health drink' defined under the FSS Act 2006, rules and regulations filed by FSSAI and Mondelez India Food Pvt Ltd,” the ministry said in a notification, dated 10 April,” the Ministry of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade said in its letter dated April 10.
Hindustan Unilever wants to grow in FND
Hindustan Unilever sees a great opportunity to grow in the FND (Food and Beverages) category. According to Tiwari, the company plans to acquire more customers, increase product usage and offer better products to encourage consumers to choose more advanced options.
The company is also finding that premium products, especially those for diabetes and women's health, are selling better.
