Some aspects of professional tennis are not glamorous.
And world number 3 Jessica Pegula revealed the unglamorous side of the sport in a witty tweet after she lost 6-1 5-7 6-0 to Barbora Krejčíková in the semifinals of the Dubai Championships on Friday.
“Everyone: “What’s it like playing on tour? It must be so great!”
“Me: get a poke on your birthday, sitting eating Doritos at midnight, waiting for a 16am flight home,” the American tweeted, alongside a selfie of her eating the chips.
In addition to reaching the semifinals in Dubai, Pegula reached the final of the Qatar Open last week, where she was defeated by the in-form Iga Swiatek.
“In all seriousness,” added Pegula in a follow-up tweet, “proud of my efforts over the past two weeks. Time for some rest.”
Pegula has become one of the best players on tour over the past two seasons, reaching high rankings in singles and doubles.
But although the result on Friday was not to her liking, she at least celebrated her 29th birthday with Coco Gauff, the number 6 in the world.
“Our (usually mine) awful singing of your birthday song,” Gauff tweeted in answer. “But at least the cake was good.”
