New Delhi:
A party nearby could have given the thieves behind the Rs 25 crore heist easy access to the Delhi jewelery store, sources said on Tuesday. The robbery, said to be one of Delhi’s biggest robberies in recent history, took place at Umrao Singh Jewelers in Bhogal district on Sunday evening.
According to sources, the thieves entered the shop from an adjacent house, the gate of which usually remains closed at night. However, the gate was not closed on Sunday evening because some tenants were partying on the first floor.
The robbers took advantage of the open gate and went to the roof of the house and then jumped onto the roof of the jewelry store, which has no road behind it.
To commit the robbery, the thieves disconnected the CCTV camera in the store and made a hole in the locker where the jewelry was kept. They also escaped with the jewelry on display in the store.
The owner, who had locked the store on Sunday evening, discovered the robbery when he opened the showroom on Tuesday morning, as his store remained closed on Monday.
It is suspected that 4-5 people were behind the robbery.
It is also suspected that an employee of the jewelry store, who did not come to work in the past 15 days, may also be involved in the robbery.
