New Delhi:
Jalandhar police have solved the murder case of a police officer, who is also an Arjuna awardee, within 48 hours using advanced technical investigation methods.
Police constable Dalbir Singh Deol, who was a weightlifter before joining the force, was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head on Wednesday.
The breakthrough came with the arrest of an autorickshaw driver, who shot the police officer after an argument over dropping him off at home.
Jugal Kishore, a police officer, saw the body near a canal while returning home from duty. Mr Kishore called his colleagues and soon launched an investigation.
Police checked several CCTV cameras and saw in one of them that Deol had taken an autorickshaw. They noted down the vehicle number and tracked the vehicle down, carefully examining CCTV footage of possible routes the tricycle may have taken.
Police may also have been monitoring mobile signals operating in the canal zone from the nearest tower.
The suspect, identified as Vijay Kumar, shot Deol on the head after taking away his service pistol. The gun was found near the body.
“We have found the body of Dalbir Singh Deol under suspicious circumstances. The place where his body was found is 6-7 km from Jalandhar. We have arrested an autorickshaw driver, Vijay Kumar, in this case,” said police chief Swapan Sharma Jalandhar.
The driver refused to drop the police officer off to his village, which led to a fight. Amid the argument, Vijay picked up Deol's service pistol and shot at his head.
