New Delhi:
A 31-year-old woman, wearing a burqa, broke into her mother's house and stole jewelery and cash, worth a total of lakhs, in Delhi's Uttam Nagar area, police said.
On January 30, a woman identified as Kamlesh approached the police about a robbery at her house in Sevak Park in Delhi's Uttam Nagar.
In her complaint, Kamlesh alleged that gold and silver jewelery worth lakhs and Rs 25,000 in cash were stolen from her house on January 30 between 2:00 PM and 2:30 PM.
The police launched a problem, but found no signs of forced entry: the locks on the main door and the cupboard were found to be intact.
The team then searched CCTV camera footage in the area and saw a woman in a burqa enter the house suspiciously. The police technical investigation led to the arrest of 31-year-old Shweta, Kamlesh's eldest daughter.
The suspect revealed during interrogation that she planned the burglary because her mother loved her younger sister more, police said. The feelings of jealousy and hatred overwhelmed her, she said, adding that she was also in debt.
Shweta told the police that she had hatched an elaborate plan to pay her dues. Some of the jewelry she stole was hers that her mother had asked to keep, while the rest was made by her mother for her sister's wedding, she said.
She then revealed how she slowly built up to the day of the robbery, police said.
According to police, Shweta first moved out of her mother's house in January to carry out the plan. For a few days, Kamlesh helped her eldest daughter arrange her new home. She would come to Shweta after her younger daughter left for work. Shweta took advantage of this.
On the day of the loot, Shweta first stole the keys of her mother's house and stepped out of her new house on the pretext of buying vegetables.
She then went to a public toilet to wear the burqa and reached her mother's house, where she opened the main door and locker with the keys and walked away with jewelry and cash. When Kamlesh heard about the robbery and informed her, Shweta pretended to be worried and upset, police said. She didn't think anyone would suspect her, she added.
Shweta reportedly told the police that she had sold the jewelry. However, the police managed to find them.
