Sydney:
Two people were killed on Saturday after a plane crashed in Mount Beauty in the Australian state of Victoria, police said.
Mount Beauty, located in the northeast of the state, is a small town surrounded by the Alpine National Park, with lakes, forests and snowfields, Xinhua news agency reported.
It is believed the pair were flying over Embankment Drive when the plane crashed at around 1.45pm local time. Both the pilot and passenger died at the scene, whose identities have yet to be formally confirmed.
Victoria Police said they were the only occupants of the plane and a report would be prepared for the coroner.
A statement from the state's Country Fire Authority (CFA) indicated that the crashed aircraft was a 'powered glider'.
“The incident is deemed under control at 2.13pm and safe at 3.34pm. Emergency services will remain on scene for a significant period of time,” the CFA said.
