Today, Google is celebrating the popularity of flat white coffee around the world through a cute and interactive doodle. The coffee drink consists of steamed milk poured over an espresso and is said to originate from Australia or New Zealand. Google has chosen March 11 to celebrate flat white, as the word was added to the Oxford English Dictionary on this day in 2011
Today's animated Doodle celebrates the flat white, a beloved coffee drink made from steamed milk poured over a shot of espresso. Many speculate that the drink was first served in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s, when the drink appeared on menus in Sydney and Auckland around the same time,” Google explains on its website.
A flat white consists of an espresso shot topped with steamed milk and a thin layer of microform and is traditionally served in a ceramic cup. The milk is steamed and not frothed, so that a smooth and velvety layer of cream remains on top.
Just like a Latte, the Flat White is also a creamy espresso-based drink, but it contains a double shot of espresso and less milk than a Latte.
Because they are flatter than a cappuccino or latte, flat whites are popular with coffee connoisseurs who are looking for less foam. Often baristas show off their skills and create beautiful works of art with the pour, something common in many cafes in Australia and New Zealand. Coffee culture has changed a lot over the years and so have the ways of making the flat white. Formerly made with whole milk, today it's common for Australians and Kiwis to order it with plant-based milk; oat milk is an increasingly popular favorite. The flat white has since spread around the world, becoming a staple in many countries,” Google further wrote.
How to make flat white | Flat white recipe:
- Brew your espresso shot. Make sure you weigh your coffee. If you don't have an espresso machine at home, try making it with Moka Pot or AeroPress.
- Steam your milk to a silky texture, creating micro foam bubbles. Fresh milk Full fat works better for making foam, but skimmed or semi-skimmed milk is also fine. Getting milk to the right consistency is not easy, so make sure you keep practicing.
- Remove any bubbles in the milk that may have formed. You do this by gently tapping your milk jug on your countertop.
- Using a spoon, pour the milk onto the espresso, making sure that the milk foam remains in the carafe while you pour only the hot milk. This way the espresso crema remains intact and your Flat White is ready.
