One of the most important celebrations in India, Makar Sankranti marks the end of winter and is a festival dedicated to the Sun God. Makar Sankranti, also called the harvest festival, is the day when the Sun enters Makara Rashi, the zodiac or constellation of Capricorn. It marks the beginning of longer days and the northward movement of the sun. Therefore, this time of the year is known as Uttarayan and is considered extremely auspicious. Since Makar Sankranti is observed in accordance with the lunar calendar, it essentially takes place on the same day every year.
Meaning of kite flying
On this day, people fly multi-colored kites, practice acts of charity and take bath in sacred rivers. It is said that the custom of flying kites on Makar Sankranti stems from ancient ideas that people should be exposed to sunlight. Exposure to sun rays helps in recovery from skin diseases and winter-related ailments. However, because sunlight is an important and high-quality source of vitamin D, it is believed to be good for health.
According to other beliefs, kite flying is a way to express appreciation and gratitude to God.
Gujarat and Rajasthan have the largest kite flying events in the country. Handmade kites are produced by people from these states several months prior to the festival. Gujarat celebrates Makar Sankranti with a grand celebration known as the 'International Kite Festival', which has been organized in the state since 1989.
