The Manipur government has issued an alert over “heavy fuel leakage” from a power plant. The state government has said that the leakage from the Leimakhong power station has led to flooding to the streams passing through the Imphal valley such as Kantosabal, Sekmai etc.
“These flows flow downstream into the Imphal River,” the government said in a statement.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh's office has alerted all concerned departments to take necessary action “to avoid an environmental disaster, utilizing all available resources in terms of machinery, manpower and expertise”.
This worrying development comes at a time when the state has been reeling from ethnic violence since May last year when clashes broke out after the 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized in the hill districts.
