People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti advocated the use of regional languages in the Kashmir Valley and called on people to speak in their mother tongue at home. He said that no one can take away their language unless they themselves forget it.
“Your houses, your water can be taken away from you, even your land can be taken away from you, but no one can take your language away from you unless you yourself forget,” PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said during a speech at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust . in Jammu on Saturday.
Mehbooba Mufti said that Kashmiris should speak their language at home. She also said that Kashmiri language has its own importance and the current generation is not giving proper interest to their mother tongue and instead using English while talking to their children.
“We have to speak our languages at home. We have stopped speaking our languages, whether it is Kashmiri, Dogri or Gujari. When a child is born, parents use the words 'come here', 'go there' (in English),” the PDP chief said.
The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir has asked people to start speaking to their children in their mother tongue at home if they want to save their language.
'So I would ask you to talk to your children at home in your own language, your mother tongue. If you want to save your language, be it Dogri, Gujari or Kashmiri. No one can take that away,” said Mehbooba Mufti.
Meanwhile, Mehbooba Mufti remembered the contributions of Masud Choudhary, former vice-chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) and chairman of Gujjar Desh Charitable Trust, on his first death anniversary.
Recalling his contributions to education and philanthropy, the former Prime Minister said his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Chaudhary, widely known as Sir Syed of the Gujjar community for his tireless efforts in social and educational awakening, retired as Additional Director General of Police in 2004.
Soon after, he was appointed as the founder and vice-chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri, where he eventually continued his service for two terms.
“When Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University was established, Mufti Sahab entrusted the job to Masud Chaudhary, knowing he could deliver. He reluctantly pursued the cause of the tribal community and mainly focused on their education and empowerment,” said Mehbooba Mufti.
Earlier on Monday, the PDP suspended all its political activities for seven days in solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, in the wake of the Supreme Court's judgment on Article 370.
