India recently successfully hosted the G20 Summit in the national capital, which was attended by over 40 world leaders and their delegations.
At the Leader’s Summit, the New Delhi Declaration was adopted unanimously and with full consensus. A major highlight of the declaration was aligning all world powers and forging consensus on an issue as divisive as the war between Russia and Ukraine.
At the end of the summit, Prime Minister Modi handed over the gavel to Brazilian President Lula da Silva and also proposed to hold a virtual G20 session in November to discuss the suggestions and proposals made at the premier forum for international economic cooperation .
During the Indian presidency, raising the voice of the South and developing countries has been at the forefront of New Delhi’s agenda. The Indian theme for the G20 chairmanship was also ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, the Sanskrit translation of which reads as ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.
Prime Minister Modi stated that the Indian G20 Presidency has become a symbol of inclusivity both within and outside the country, adding that it has become the “People’s G20” in India and millions of citizens are associated with it.
An important and historic achievement of India’s chairmanship of the G20 summit is the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the Group of 20 (G20).
