Belagavi,Karnataka:
A woman was allegedly attacked, paraded naked and tied to an electricity pole in a Belagavi village after her son eloped with a girl who was getting engaged to someone else, police said on Monday.
When her relatives came to know about the girl's act, her relatives attacked and damaged his house in Vantamuri new village.
They then allegedly dragged his mother away, paraded her naked and tied her to a utility pole, they said.
The police, who rushed to the spot and released her, have arrested seven persons in connection with the incident and are investigating the matter. Additional troops have been deployed to prevent untoward incidents.
Belagavi Police Commissioner Siddramappa said that both 24-year-old Ashok and 18-year-old Priyanka, who belonged to the same community and village, were in love. They left the village around 12.30 pm on Monday.
Angered by this, the girl's parents and relatives barged into his house and treated his mother inhumanely, police said.
“When we got the information at 4 am, our sub-inspector of police visited the village followed by other senior officials and seven people have been arrested,” he said, adding that a case has been registered at Kakati police station .
Commenting on the incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “Strict action will be taken against those who committed the offence.”
Calling the incident “extremely inhumane”, Siddaramaiah later said in a post on 'X', “This has left the entire society bowing its heads in shame. Our government will not tolerate such heinous acts for any reason.” “Several people have already been arrested in connection with the case. It is our full responsibility to provide justice to the aggrieved family by taking action to ensure that the perpetrators are severely punished,” he added.
Home Minister G Parameshwara, who visited the area, termed the incident inhumane and said 10 to 15 members of the girl's family allegedly attacked the girl's mother, who was alone at home.
Police rescued the woman and took her to hospital for treatment, he said. “Those responsible…seven people have been arrested and will appear in court…efforts are on to recover the eloped couple.”
This is truly a shameful incident, Parameshwara said, adding that police are taking action in accordance with the law.
