Wilson's heart stopped beating twice within a 50-minute span at his home, forcing paramedics to use a defibrillator 17 times to revive him. However, in a testament to his strength and resilience, Wilson defied these predictions.
After being in a medically induced coma for five weeks to protect his brain from lack of oxygen, he has gradually regained his ability to walk and talk. He recently proposed to his partner, Rebekah Holmes, who reports experiencing only minor speech and short-term memory problems.
She said: “When the paramedics came they said it didn't look good. They used a defibrillator to shock him 11 times within 40 minutes before he finally got a heartbeat. But when they took him out into the garden he again, and they shocked him six times in another ten minutes and brought him back. They immediately put him into an induced coma to minimize the damage.”
Mr Wilson, a traffic management worker, is now back home and planning his wedding, a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome even the most daunting of challenges.
“I stayed by his side the whole time and told him I loved him. I sang our song 'Dream a Little Dream of Me', sprayed my perfume on his pillow and put a teddy bear on it that he had bought for me, with the words: 'I love you to the moon and back' by his side. I believe my love for him got him through it. It's a miracle he survived, but there are studies that say love and touch can help,” Rebekah Holmes continued.
“Ben has always been a hopeless romantic, he has arranged flowers and cards for me, and I feel like I have repaid him for all the love and affection he has shown me in the seven years we have been together.”
