Eleven airline passengers and crew members were taken to hospital on Tuesday after severe turbulence on a Delta flight from Milan to Atlanta New York Post reported. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Flight 175 had left Milan, Italy and was about 40 miles northeast of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when the crew reported severe turbulence.
The plane landed safely around 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday, but several people had to be hospitalized.
Videos of the incident that have surfaced online show passengers being carried on stretchers by paramedics and at least one person walking off the plane wearing a neck brace. Airport officials said none of the injuries were life-threatening.
This was told by a woman who was on board the plane Fox5 that unharmed passengers waited two hours before being allowed to depart.
It appeared to be about 12 people with serious head injuries. Also some flight attendants. A lot of blood and horror. My fiancé and I are so panicked that we rent a car and drive to our final destination instead,” she said.
In particular, the aircraft was carrying 151 passengers, 10 flight attendants and four pilots.
“Delta Care Team members are mobilizing to connect with Delta Flight 175 customers who experienced severe turbulence before landing safely in Atlanta on Tuesday. Our priority is caring for our customers and crew members who have suffered injuries. We are grateful to the first responders who met the plane to provide medical attention and transport the injured [the] hospital,” Delta said in a statement.
The airline also said Delta agents provided food, shelter and rebooking for the uninjured customers.
The Federal Aviation Administration has since launched an investigation into the incident.
